Care and Feed

Reindeer are ruminants, and as such obtain only 20% of their protein requirements directly from their feed, the other 80% is obtained from beneficial bacteria which uses the animals feed as a nutrient source.

The feed must remain in the rumen long enough for this process to happen, fiber aids this process.

Feed that is too finely ground (a pelleted ration) or lack of fiber in the diet will allow very little protein to bypass the rumen, and a large portion cannot and will not be used by the animals.

Therefore, we recommend a ration with pelleted minerals and vitamins, and rolled cereal grains is best, along with pelleted alfalfa pellets.

Reindeer can be halter broke just like a horse or ponyProvincial and state regulations may play a part in fencing requirements.

We encourage all potential buyers to check with their local authorities before purchasing animals.
